Some books find you exactly when you need them. You might not even be looking for answers, but your mind is finally ready to see them: just like the old saying, "when the student is ready, the teacher appears."
First published in 1908 by authors calling themselves The Three Initiates, The Kybalion presents seven universal principles said to govern not only the material world, but consciousness itself. Whether one views these principles as ancient wisdom or modern synthesis, their relevance is difficult to dismiss once they are understood.
Below are the seven principles and my interpretation of these universal laws.
The Seven Hermetic Principles
1. The Principle of Mentalism
“The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental.”
2. The Principle of Correspondence
“As above, so below; as below, so above.”
3. The Principle of Vibration
“Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.”
Everything is in motion, even when it appears still.
This governs our emotional states, mental shifts, and the temporary nature of circumstances.
Understanding vibration allows one to move through pain, fear, or success without clinging to them, because all are temporary phases, not fixed identities.
4. The Principle of Polarity
“Everything is dual; everything has poles.”
Hot and cold, light and dark, joy and sorrow: These are degrees of the same spectrum, not separate things.
This principle is essential for balance. Life does not require living at extremes, and self-mastery comes from remaining centered in our experiences and not being ruled by them.
Remaining in the mid-pole allows clarity, emotional stability, and discernment even during difficult events.
5. The Principle of Rhythm
“Everything flows, out and in.”
Life moves in cycles: Expansion and contraction. Gain and loss. Ease and difficulty.
When this principle is understood, despair loses its hold. Even when life feels heavy or unfair, rhythm reminds us that our conditions are always changing, like the ebb and flow of ocean waves.
True mastery is not about stopping the pendulum of rhythm. It is about remaining anchored at the center, navigating life's highs and lows with conscious awareness.
6. The Principle of Cause and Effect
“Every cause has its effect; every effect has its cause.”
Nothing happens by chance. Every experience in our lives is the outcome of a cause, whether that cause is known, hidden, or set in motion long ago.
This principle eliminates a victim mindset without forcing us to blame ourselves or others for what happens. Instead, it invites accountability. By realizing that every outcome has a cause, we understand that our current actions will determine our future results.
When we grasp cause and effect, we reclaim our power. We transition from passively reacting to life to consciously choosing how we think, act, and respond.
7. The Principle of Gender
“Gender is in everything.”
Why These Principles Are Key to Living a Successful Life
These principles are in line with how nature works. They do not demand belief, and they operate regardless of anyone's acknowledgment, much like the law of gravity.
Understanding them does not eliminate difficulty, but it does eliminate the confusion that life can sometimes provide. In addition, embodying these Hermetic Principles provides a stable internal reference point that prevents emotional extremes, reactive living, and a loss of self during change.
