Chico’s New Cancer Center Opens With Huge Sugar Cookies and Demonizes the Sun

Chico is preparing to open one of he largest medical facilities the North State has ever seen: the Enloe Health Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center. It spans approximately 101,000 square feet across three stories and sits on 13 acres in Meriam Park.

The new cancer center is nearly three times the size of Enloe’s former 34,000-square-foot facility. According to Enloe, it will bring medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, dermatology, nutrition, integrative medicine, clinical trials, symptom management and family support together under one roof. It will contain 51 infusion spaces, 14 consultation rooms, three linear accelerators, an on-site laboratory and a specialty pharmacy. Enloe also acknowledges that cancer rates across Northern California remain among the highest in the state. [Source]

For people who have already received a cancer diagnosis, having coordinated care close to home is meaningful. Families should not have to drive for hours while someone they love is exhausted, frightened or receiving treatment. That is not what I question.

What I question is why our greatest investments begin after the diagnosis.

We can raise more than $21 million from the community, donate 13 acres of land and build a state-of-the-art medical complex larger than a warehouse. Yet where is the equally ambitious center devoted to understanding why so many people in this region are becoming sick in the first place? 

Where is the massive public effort addressing food quality, environmental exposures, chronic stress, metabolic health, sleep, movement, clean water, sunlight and the conditions in which the human body is expected to live?

That question became impossible to ignore after a friend of mine and her husband attended the center’s grand-opening celebration. She is a retired nurse. He is a retired physician. They are not unfamiliar with hospitals or medicine.

At this celebration for a cancer center, guests were served enormous sugary cookies.

They were also offered free sunglasses, conventional toxic sunscreen and plastic bracelets that changed color when the wearer had supposedly received enough sun. In one tidy collection of giveaways, the message was unmistakable: enjoy the sugar, cover your skin, shield your eyes and let a plastic bracelet tell you when nature has become dangerous.

This was not happening at a county fair. It was happening at the opening of a 101,000-square-foot cancer-treatment facility in a region carrying one of California’s heaviest cancer burdens.

We Have Turned the Sun Into the Enemy

Modern public-health messaging has trained people to think of sunlight almost entirely as a threat. Wear dark glasses. Cover the skin. Apply chemical products. Get indoors. Avoid the midday sun. Fear every ray.

But sunlight is not a single substance with a single biological effect. It is a spectrum of wavelengths interacting with the eyes, skin, blood vessels, hormones, immune system and circadian clock. 

Daylight entering the eyes is one of the body’s primary time signals. Ocular light helps synchronize melatonin, cortisol, sleep and wakefulness; research on people without functional ocular light perception shows how easily circadian rhythms can become disrupted when that signal is lost. 

Sunlight on the skin initiates vitamin D production. Active vitamin D helps regulate immune activity and stimulates antimicrobial peptides, part of the body’s innate defense system.  Exposure to UVA can also release nitric oxide stored in the skin, affecting blood flow and vascular tone. 

The relationship between sunlight and human health is far more complex than a yellow bracelet, sunglasses and a bottle of sunscreen suggest.

Medicine Once Knew This

Heliotherapy, the deliberate therapeutic use of sunlight, was once respected medicine, not fringe folklore.

Danish physician Niels Ryberg Finsen studied the biological effects of light and used concentrated light radiation to treat lupus vulgaris, a severe form of skin tuberculosis. His work earned him the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for opening what the Nobel committee called “a new avenue for medical science.”

Swiss physician Auguste Rollier later established heliotherapy clinics in the Alps, where patients with surgical and skeletal tuberculosis were treated with carefully graduated sunlight, fresh air, rest, nourishment and movement. Finsen’s official Nobel biography specifically records the success of high-altitude sun treatment practiced by Rollier and Oscar Bernhard. 

Antibiotics eventually replaced heliotherapy as the standard treatment for tuberculosis. But replacing a treatment is not the same as proving that sunlight has no biological value. We kept the pharmaceutical chapter and quietly tore out much of the earlier history.

There is also a remarkable modern story frequently recounted by pulmonary and critical care physician Dr. Roger Seheult. He describes a 15 year old boy with blood cancer who developed an aggressive fungal infection in his lungs. One lung had reportedly been removed, the other was infected and the boy was believed to be near death. His request was simply to be taken outside. He spent hours in the sun over several days, and the infection in the remaining lung reportedly began to resolve. 

A System Built Around the Diagnosis

The new Chico center is designed to make cancer treatment more coordinated, efficient and comfortable. Once cancer is found, the machinery is ready: imaging, specialists, infusion chairs, radiation equipment, pharmaceuticals, symptom management and supportive services, all contained inside a beautiful new building.

But where is the machinery for creating health?

Where is the same financial urgency for helping people rebuild metabolic function before disease takes hold? Where is the deep investigation into why particular rural counties carry such a heavy burden? Where are the community programs centered on real food, movement, sleep, nervous-system regulation, clean environments and a healthy relationship with natural light?

Instead, at the ceremonial entrance to this new monument to cancer treatment, visitors were handed oversized sugar cookies and tools for avoiding the sun.

A region with exceptionally high cancer rates deserves excellent local treatment. It also deserves something more difficult and more honest: a serious public reckoning with why so many people are becoming patients.

The Gonzales Comprehensive Cancer Center is an extraordinary investment in what happens after the diagnosis. Now imagine what might be possible if we invested just as boldly in helping people remain well.

Who Are You When Everything Gets Taken Away?

I believe the world around us is beginning to crumble, not necessarily because everything is ending, but because so much of what we built was never sustainable. We created a world driven by status, money, competition, appearances, productivity, and ego. We learned to measure human worth by what someone owns, earns, achieves, or displays. It was never a particularly gentle world, and now its foundations are cracking.

Something new will have to take its place. I hope we create a world that is a little softer. One where kindness is not mistaken for weakness. Where people matter beyond their usefulness. Where we are more connected to one another, to nature, to our bodies, and to spirit. A world where success is not determined by how loudly someone can promote themselves or how much attention they can capture.

Because the digital world is waiting to define us. It can give us identities, opinions, distractions, artificial relationships, and endless ways to escape the quiet. It can convince us that visibility is the same as value and that being noticed is the same as being known. Those who have never discovered who they are without their possessions, titles, approval, followers, or carefully constructed image may be the easiest to consume.

That may be why the question matters now more than ever: Who are you when everything gets taken away?

Who are you without an audience? Without a title? Without money to display or accomplishments to list? Who are you when the screen goes dark and you are sitting quietly with God?

Perhaps the people capable of creating the next world will be those who have already survived the collapse of their own. The ones who lost what once defined them and discovered that something living still remained. The ones who kept creating, kept caring, kept telling the truth, and kept trying to be human in a world determined to turn humanity into data.

I do not have everything I once had, and I am not where I thought I would be. But I am still creating. I am still trying to help others. I am still working on myself. I am still choosing kindness without allowing it to erase me. And perhaps that is who I am, not what the world gave me, but what remained when so much of it was taken away.

History shows that infrastructure booms rarely end when the financial bubble bursts. The investors may lose everything, but the physical network they financed survives and often ends up under the control of institutions wealthy enough to purchase it after the collapse.

During Britain’s Railway Mania of the 1840s, promoters raised enormous sums from ordinary investors by promising that an expanding rail network would produce extraordinary returns. Speculative railway shares soared, competing companies constructed overlapping routes, and families poured their savings into the boom. When the bubble broke, share prices collapsed and countless investors were ruined. The tracks, stations, land rights, and transportation corridors did not disappear. Larger operators eventually absorbed failed competitors and consolidated the network that public speculation had helped finance.

The dot-com boom followed the same pattern. Investors flooded internet and telecommunications companies with money, much of it flowing through mutual funds and retirement accounts. Those companies spent heavily on fiber optic cable, server facilities, and communications networks while promising profits that many could never deliver. When the bubble burst, shareholders watched trillions of dollars in market value vanish. Yet the physical internet infrastructure remained. Bankrupt companies were dismantled, their assets were purchased cheaply, and the surviving network became the foundation upon which a smaller group of dominant technology corporations built the modern digital economy.

The coming AI bust does not mean artificial intelligence will disappear. It means the financial promises surrounding AI may collapse long before the infrastructure does.

Today’s technology giants are spending extraordinary amounts on chips, data centers, power generation, cooling systems, fiber networks, and land. Much of the public is already financing this expansion indirectly because the companies leading it dominate the market indexes held inside millions of 401(k)s, pensions, and Target-Date Funds. Workers do not need to deliberately purchase a speculative AI stock. Every automatic retirement contribution can increase their exposure to the corporations funding the buildout.

If AI revenue fails to justify these enormous expenditures, share prices could collapse while the physical system remains firmly in place. Retirement accounts would absorb part of the market loss, but the data centers, energy contracts, water rights, fiber routes, proprietary models, and surveillance capacity would still exist. Cash-rich corporations, banks, creditors, and private-equity firms could then acquire distressed assets at sharply reduced prices, consolidating control over infrastructure that public savings helped finance.

That is what separates the AI boom from earlier infrastructure manias. Railroads centralized transportation. The internet centralized communication and commerce. AI infrastructure can centralize the collection, interpretation, and control of human data itself.

This is the “Involuntary Shareholder” loop: workers are automatically exposed to the financial risk through their retirement accounts, private insiders gain an avenue to convert inflated valuations into real wealth, and the institutions positioned to survive a crash can emerge owning the underlying digital infrastructure. The public finances the boom, absorbs the bust, and is left living inside the system that remains

Introducing The Body Buddies: A 5-Book Children's Series by Julie Telgenhoff

Most of us grow up learning the basics of the human body. We learn that the heart pumps blood, the lungs help us breathe and the stomach digests our food. But how many of us were ever really taught about the lymphatic system? What about fascia, the connective tissue woven throughout the body? 

These systems play important roles in how our bodies function, yet many people reach adulthood knowing almost nothing about them. 

That realization became the inspiration for The Body Buddies book series. I wanted to find a way to introduce these ideas to young children before words like lymphatic system, fascia and cellular waste ever had a chance to sound complicated. 

The solution was to turn the body into something almost every child understands: a house. 

Inside the Body House, the cells become the rooms. Celly and Shelly live there and, just like us, they need food and water to do their jobs. They also make "cellular" waste that has to be cleaned up. 

Bud (the blood) represents the kitchen, and his job is to bring oxygen, water and nutrients to the cells. 

Lynn, Patrick and the Lymphettes represent the lymphatic cleanup system from the bathroom, collecting extra fluid and waste and helping keep the Body House clean. 

Then there is Ms. Fascinista, who represents fascia. Her stretchy connective web runs throughout the Body House, surrounding, supporting and connecting everything together. She helps children see that the different rooms and Body Buddies are not isolated from one another. 

They are all part of one connected body. 

That is really the message behind the entire series. The human body is not simply a collection of separate parts. Everything works together. And by using a house, lovable characters and a little bathroom humor, The Body Buddies gives young children a simple way to begin understanding the incredible body they live in. 

My hope is that The Body Buddies series sparks curiosity and helps kids grow up feeling connected to and amazed by the incredible bodies they live in.
