I’ve purchased several natural shampoos that I really enjoy, but the price is not always as enjoyable. So I thought that a homemade shampoo recipe would be my best option for a natural alternative that is easy on the pocketbook.
Many homemade shampoo recipes use a base of Castile soap. While I enjoy Castile soap for hands and body cleansing, my hair has never felt clean after shampooing with it. It just feels weighed down and heavy.
Each of the recipes below can be used as often as you find necessary. And the best part is they all use only one natural ingredient each that you probably already have in your home.
Homemade Shampoo Recipe
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
Mix the baking soda with a small amount of water until a paste forms. Apply the paste to the roots of your hair only. Massage around your hairline and throughout your scalp. Rinse with water.
Nourishing Rinse Recipe
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar OR lemon juice
Mix vinegar with a small amount of water. Apply the mixture to the ends of your hair only. Rinse with water.
Deep Conditioner
- 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
If you feel your hair is too dry or frizzy you can apply a tiny amount of coconut oil to your hair. I just place a tiny amount in my palm, rub it around, and run my fingers through my hair. No rinsing necessary. I have naturally oily hair and this conditioner in very small amounts is light enough to effectively condition my hair without making it heavy or greasy.
This series of cleaning, rinsing, and conditioning leaves my hair feeling clean and healthy. It’s shinier and healthier. If you find the vinegar too harsh you can substitute lemon juice with excellent results. Also, if you find the baking soda too abrasive for your scalp you can reduce the amount by half and mix in more water to make it more of a rinse.
